I love this quote about Ani DeFranco from Small Giants:
IRS Records wanted to sign Ani, and we went to see them in Los Angeles. They had this beautiful office. I thought, ‘Who’s paying for this?’ I couldn’t see anything they had that we really needed. IRS had a phone; we had a phone. IRS had a fax machine; we had a fax machine. They said they could get Ani’s music to a larger audience, but we didn’t think that she needed them to do that. Now IRS is gone, and we’re still here. And I think that staying in Buffalo all this time, working in a modest office, was a factor. It helped us keep things in perspective.
