Maintaining Personal Integrity in Your Career

Barry Eisler asks some tough questions in this essay on journalistic integrity, and I think they can also be applied to working on the Web, or in any industry. I like to think of myself as having strong standards for what types of clients and projects I take on, but after reading the article, I’m left questioning some decisions I’ve made in the past, and I think that’s a very healthy and necessary thing to do.

One of the most striking points is when he asks, “Can you identify a personal or career cost to any of your decisions?  If not… bad sign.”

I think one of the most important takeaways from the article is how intentional you have to be about protecting your integrity. If you don’t anticipate and prepare for these kinds of moral challenges, then it becomes much more likely that you’ll end up compromising, and then it becomes even harder to reverse the trend.
